The Last Post,
known in the military to honor the brave and the fallen. Three simple words, that combined resemble the strength, brotherhood, friendship, sadness and a certain nostalgia. The feeling of those good old times, when the world was perfect and the Spartan Clan was the most respected, feared and unified clan of all Wolfenstein ET!
Times where a 60 slots server would be filled non-stop, with players from all over the world. The server wasn't running fancy mods and used only the stock maps. It was also a living hell for newcomers. Anyone can remember the humiliation of facing someone like Spartan_Eazy, who would plough through an entire bunker of scared Axis noobs, screaming for their mothers... Then why did people keep coming? Why did the biggest noobs and people who played for fun keep on respawning after yet another syrene-driven medic from hell swept through what they thought was their 'safe sniper spot'?
Because everyone, literally everyone, accepted the challenge. The Spartan Clan, known for it's hierarchical structure and though selection procedures, was a beacon of light in a game full of internet harassment and badly functioning clans. It resembled the absolute elite in the game, not only in means of being pure savage on the battlefield, but also because it was a group where simple rules applied and individuals were respected. This resulted in a friendly, but very competitive atmosphere, for so many years, which is unique in online gaming.
I also started as a fresh draftee being send into Normandy, not knowing what to expect. After trying multiple servers, I found myself at home in Sparta. The combination of complete amazement what some people were able to pull off in this game and the frustration of not being where they were, made me motivated as hell. I played and played and played. Had fun, made friends, saw some wicked stuff, did wicked stuff in the game. But then there was the Spartan forum. A place where true online friendships could evolve, based on nothing more than a crappy online shooter. It had been my go-to address for some years, when I was just some guy playing, to the point where I was part of this clan, and even so far that I had the opportunity to take Sparta to the next generation of gaming. From being stabbed in a gunfight, to actually pull off a 110 killing spree with my beloved sniper rifle, it was great!
But, as any form of human interaction and organisation, Sparta also had it's darker sides. People disappearing with server money, putting everyone to shame, useless fights during a power vacuum and even the use of bots by members. This combined with constant decreasing server fill rates, went on the become an explosive situation, which eventually couldn't be saved. Not even by this great clan. For me personally, the sudden stop of the CoD4 project, which I was leading and what could be the step into the future, was one of the biggest mistakes the server owners made. But, it is how it is. People moved on to new games, life goes on. But the most surprising thing is: I don't game anymore. After Wolfenstein ET and the short time on CoD4, I never found any game which was so much fun to play. Never saw any community that was so nice and friendly. So for me, my gaming life has been Sparta. I wish all of you the best in your lives, and remember: the key to success is based on respecting one another and taking your luck in your own hands!
